TORUS is technologically advanced CAD-based software for designing modern roundabouts based on either design vehicle tire tracking or regional design rules. With dynamic editing features and immediate feedback on fastest path and sight line evaluation, engineers can produce optimal roundabout designs efficiently. TORUS revolutionizes the way roundabouts are designed by minimizing iteration cycles in the design process while incorporating speed, design vehicle and sight distance checks.

Using the vehicle envelopes design method, the roundabout design is generated by applying design guidelines (in the form of design vehicles for each aspect of the roundabout design; vehicle path radii and offsets to determine entry, exit, and circulating lane widths; inscribed circle diameter; splitter island envelope offsets; pedestrian refuge and crosswalk settings; and fastest path settings such as superelevation, acceleration, and critical offsets) to user drawn reference geometry (think of these lines and arcs as the schematic of the approach legs). TORUS 'drives' the design vehicles through the roundabout design (applying the design guidelines) to determine the design as opposed to conventional manual methods where the design is drawn and then checked using vehicle templates.

Alternatively, design guidelines developed from regional design methods can be used to design a roundabout whose aspects are governed by the selected region's design rules.

TORUS includes complete sets of standard design vehicles for a number of different countries (see Vehicle Library Source Documents) as well as manufacturer specific vehicles and compatibility data. Custom vehicles need to be created in AutoTURN and imported into TORUS.

TORUS works in millimeters, centimeters, meters, inches, or feet units. Vehicle dimensions and path geometry need not be expressed in the same units.
